Significant production
Over 14% of Finland's total wind power capacity is located in the region.
Smooth connections
The region's extensive power line network ensures flexible connections to the main grid.
Reliable partners
Cooperation with local authorities is smooth, and operators are supported by an extensive network.
With the growth of clean energy production in the region, it is possible to offer some of the most affordable green electricity in Europe.
Finland is among the leading EU countries in the use of renewable energy. The government's goal is to be carbon neutral by 2035 and the first fossil-free welfare society in the world. Various support and financing options are also available for investments in renewable energy.
The demand for clean energy is growing significantly as industry transitions to more sustainable production. SSAB's Raahe steel mill alone requires approximately 3 TWh of energy per year as the mill is being converted to carbon-free steel production.
Raahe Region has expertise and know-how in large industrial plants and projects, which is a significant advantage in launching, building, and maintaining new projects.
Wind energy
The wind energy industry offers significant business opportunities in the coastal region of Northern Ostrobothnia. Raahe Region is one of Finland's largest concentrations of wind power projects on land, and in the future also at sea. A regional offshore wind power center is currently being developed at the Port of Raahe, which will create a port environment on the coast of the Bothnian Bay that meets the high requirements for the construction and maintenance of power plants. In addition to suitable production conditions and location, the region's advantages for implementing energy projects include a functioning infrastructure and comprehensive logistics and subcontracting services.
Solar energy
Raahe Region has many areas that are ideal for solar power plants. In addition to the power plants already in operation in the region, there are numerous new industrial-scale solar energy projects underway and in the pipeline. Interest in the use of solar energy has grown significantly as environmental awareness has increased and energy saving targets have been set. In addition to industry, there is growth potential for new energy solutions in the region's strong agricultural sector. Solar panels are also increasingly being installed in commercial, public, and private building construction and renovation projects.
Energy storage and smart grids
Clean energy storage is a key part of business opportunities. To ensure a reliable and flexible energy supply, the need for batteries and other storage technologies will grow significantly. Raahe Region offers opportunities for developing smart energy systems that efficiently produce, store, and distribute clean energy. Energy can also be utilized in fuel refining.
Nuclear power
On the coast of the Bothnian Bay, in the Hanhikivi area of Pyhäjoki, there is an area of approximately 500 hectares with infrastructure ready for a nuclear power plant, hydrogen production facilities, or other large industrial investments. The existing roads, electricity grid, zoning, port, and support functions will significantly speed up the launch of projects. The area currently has 200–250 MW of electricity available with the construction of a few new lines, and the capacity will increase to over 1,000 MW with two already approved 400 MW lines. Seawater for industrial use is also available in the immediate vicinity of the area.
