Raahe Region has exceptional opportunities to utilize renewable energy sources, as it is one of Finland's windiest areas. In addition, numerous new solar and wind power projects are underway or in the planning stages, so the production of affordable and emission-free electricity will continue to grow. Areas suitable for industrial hydrogen production have already been mapped out in the region, and a zoning process is currently underway in Raahe to enable the construction of a production facility near SSAB's steel mill and port.
The region has a strong industrial tradition, particularly in the metal industry and steel manufacturing. The green transition and the move away from fossil fuels are opening up new opportunities for players in the industry. The pioneering SSAB steel mill in Raahe is preparing for fossil-free production, which means a transition to hydrogen reduction. The examples set by pioneers, technological developments and new innovations, as well as climate policy and regulation, are also encouraging others to develop their operations. There are many opportunities for cooperation and synergies in the production of electric fuels and the introduction of hydrogen technologies in industry. New chemical industries may also emerge in the region, processing hydrogen into carbon-neutral fertilizers, for example, in addition to electric fuels.
The production and transport of electric fuels require efficient infrastructure. The Raahe region has good transport connections to the rest of the world via the Port of Raahe, and shipping is also a potential area where hydrogen and other electric fuels can be used to decarbonize transport. Gasgrid's project to build a national hydrogen network on the west coast of Finland, for which the route plan for the pipeline is currently being finalized, will increase future opportunities and options.
Located just an hour away from the region, the University of Oulu is conducting impressive research in the field of clean energy solutions and hydrogen technology. Research and development projects enable the region to develop innovative solutions and improve the cost-effectiveness of electric fuel production.
Finland and the EU have set ambitious climate targets, in which the production of electric fuels plays an important role. The state and the EU also provide funding and incentives for the development of green energy and technology. Raahe Region and its business community play a key role in achieving these national targets. The City of Raahe is also one of the so-called Hinku municipalities, which are committed to achieving an 80% reduction in emissions by 2030 from 2007 levels.
Clean energy
Raahe Region is one of the largest concentrations of green energy in Finland.
Port
The Port of Raahe is the third busiest in Finland and one of the northernmost seaports in Europe.
