Port

The Port of Raahe is Finland's third busiest port and one of the northernmost seaports in Europe. The port plays a key role in increasing clean energy production, and investments serve the industry and vitality of the entire region.

The port handles around 600 ships annually and has been in operation year-round for over 40 years. Raahe has good sea transport connections to the heart of Europe, England, and the Mediterranean. There are regular connections to Antwerp, Vejle, Hull, Szczecin, Pasajes, and Ravenna, among others.

Raahe has a long history of seafaring dating back centuries, as it has been an important trading center since the 18th century and is Finland's largest shipbuilding city.

The Green Port of Raahe

Port of Raahe is Finland's third busiest port with an annual foreign freight volume of approximately 6 million tons and one of the northernmost seaports in Europe. Future investments in the port will serve local and regional industry and will be of great value in promoting the green transition by providing a modern operating environment in a strategic location for offshore wind power, the green hydrogen economy, and related value chains.

The Port of Raahe consists of three year-round ports: Lapaluoto Port, Syväsatama Port, and SSAB's industrial port. The industrial port is intended solely for the operations of the steel company SSAB. Currently, the port has eight covered warehouses with a total area of approximately 30,000 m2 and approximately 30 hectares of outdoor storage areas. The Port of Raahe can handle many types of cargo, such as dry bulk cargo and large project shipments, such as wind turbine components.

Finland's sea areas have considerable wind power production potential, which is also significant in terms of achieving national sustainable energy targets. The Port of Raahe plays a key role in increasing wind power production. The offshore wind power capacity in the Raahe area is up to 23 GW (1,500 turbines). New onshore and offshore projects already announced in the area include a capacity of approximately 5.8 GW (500 turbines). Proactive and timely investments in functional port infrastructure are essential to enable the construction and operation of wind power production.

SSAB's steel mill in Raahe is the port's most important user. SSAB plans to transform its production fossil-free by around 2030. The plans are to convert the Raahe mill into a new cost-efficient mini-mill with electric arc furnaces, integrated rolling and further processing. The new production facility will also require new facilities at the port, such as a new all-weather terminal (AWT) for 10,000 dwt vessels and terminals for SSAB's steel products.

The total planned investments in the port by the end of the decade amount to approximately EUR 200 million.
